13 - The reflection list
This list originated during the first real vacation that I took once I was working and my wife and I were fully independent adults. Before the trip, while reviewing my system, I made a list of the things that I would like to think on and reflect about, if I had the chance while we were enjoying the trip. I didn't want to open my system and see all the tasks until I returned, so I got a 3x5 index card and listed those things I would love to think about if the opportunity showed up. The opportunity showed up and I found that there’s nothing better that fixing the world (or the little part that I have influence on) while gazing at the ocean and sipping a glass of Rioja wine.
The other thing I was carrying with me on that vacation was a pen and a Moleskine that I had brought in case I needed to write. This was so I wouldn’t have to pull out my phone during the trip. I wanted to avoid the temptation of sabotaging my resting time or worse, that my wife would be mad at me because I had promised her that we were going to have a real vacation.
Not only was the experience incredible, but I was able to think without worrying about the tasks on my lists (and the many others than I wasn't aware of that were hovering over my head, bothering me). The experience was such a great one that I transformed the reflection list into something that it is part of my system and once a week, (sometimes even more than that) I open this list and spend some time thinking on these things. Sometimes items live on the lists for months, for no other reason other than I feel I haven’t reflected enough and reached a conclusion.
The requirement for an item to be removed from this list is simple: I need to reach to the point at which I don't want or need to think or write more on that topic. Meeting this criteria can be difficult because, like most of the things you need to think and reflect on, fear always discourages me from continuing. That means I must determine if I’ve really finished or that fear doesn't want me to continue exploring the topic. Many times I have convinced myself that I have covered a topic, only to see it come back weeks or months later.
Recently (and for more than a year) this was one of the items on my list:
- What do you write? Fiction or productivity? Both? Neither?
It isn't a secret that I love to write fiction, but it isn't a secret that I love to talk about productivity. I am not looking to be a guru in productivity, that much I know, but without a doubt it’s a topic that had been incredibly useful for me and from which I feel that I have many things to share.
